BASIC SUMMARY
Ivan (a poor unlucky boy) has just returned from the woods with a potion that is supposed to heal his sick father. When the Czar shows up at his doorstep he mistakenly drinks the potion thinking it is juice. The Czar goes zany and gives Ivan an old ring to thank him. At the palace the Czar promises half of Russia to the person who can bring him the rarest gift. Ivan learns that the ring is magic and (with the help of his new found friends - the talking cat and dog) Ivan tries to win the kingdom. Soon he gets caught up in his own "big-headed-ness". When Elizabeta (the princess) steals Ivan's ring in an attempt to escape royal life, she ends up marching straight into the cruel Queen Khan's custody. With the assistance of Baba Yaga (the witch from the woods) all is set right again.
WHAT MAKES IT UNIQUE
This production is ideal for organizations that are looking for an unknown fairy tale, teachers could also use the Russian setting to teach students about historic figures, clothing, houses, etc. Although the characters of the Czar and Ivan should be played by males whenever possible, the majority of the other characters (Vasily, Sasha, Misha, Chelvek) could become female if necessary. If Vasily is cast as a female the character should be a grandmother instead of a father.
